Cyprus Authorities Implement Stricter Working Rights for Student Permit Holders

Written by Leanne Cottrell | Jun 16, 2022 3:34:56 PM

In an attempt to further protect student rights and simultaneously limit local labor market access, the Cypriot authorities have introduced a number of changes for student visa holders.

Measures taken include reducing work authorization for student permit holders from 30 hours per week to 20 hours per week during term time, and 38 hours per week during the school holiday periods. Students will only be permitted to work in occupations on the shortage list and in internships related to their studies. Previously, there were no restrictions to the occupation or industry they worked in.

Additionally, employers are now required to submit employment contracts to the local labor office for approval and stamping. Internships will also require a written internship agreement between the educational institution and the employer, which is to be approved by the Department of Labour.
